The days of flashing lights in discos and dj's spinning out vinyl records on turntables sometimes seem all but past, but everytime this happens, a revival occurs. Something or someone returns to the traditional concept of original mixing and the excitment and entertainment that comes from a truly skilled live dj who can easily revitalize even the most outdated old melody. This graphic is representative of the dj revival throughout the world. While people may still believe that disco is dead, the dj is more successful than ever. With night clubs worldwide constantly bringing in the hottest names in the dj business while also promoting new djs whenever they get the chance, the music scene of dance has become one of the hottest ever.
It is no surprise then, that this graphic depicts a black dj with an afro as he looks down at his turntable and mixer, particles and shapes that seem to represent sound energy radiating out from above him. Several vinyl records turn out from behind him, and the primary colours of the graphic - an emphatic yellow and a deep black - seem to suggest an incredible build up of force that is moving as the main momentum behind the dj movement. This graphic also makes it clear that music and dancing is a firmly ingrained part of the wearer's lifestyle. It makes a very solid statement that disco is not dead, and that the great dj revival is currently occuring with maxium force.
The most surprising part of this graphic, however, is not the dj and disco symbolism. It is, instead, the catch phrase that stands out in bright yellow on the afro of the dj in the image: free your mind. This phrase has been used fairly frequently in pop culture incarnations such as the movie The Matrix, among other things, but here it seems to indicate that music can actually open the mind and expand the doors of perception to something other than what they might typically be. It is this phrase that sums up the meaning of this graphic, demonstrating that not only is music a living, breathing organism, but that it can influence the mind, body and spirit in a positive direction.
