The funny little man that is the central focus point of this graphic would be an interesting person to meet in real life. His eyes and nose are hidden somewhere within his droopy, oversized beanie, and only a mouth shows, expressing a sardonic smile that curves just slightly up to the left side of his face. His brightly coloured clothing, from his yellow sweatshirt to his blue, baggy jeans make him an interesting figure. Out from behind him, psychedelic shapes spurt wildly, but in an oddly controlled geometric pattern. From his back, a thin green vine curls around his hat and dangles from its tip.
Of course, the real focus of this shirt is neither the colourful shapes in the background nor the figure in the foreground. It is, in fact, the object that this little man is holding: a gigantic, neon coloured mushroom that, clearly is not the typical fungi you might find in the produce isle of the supermarket. The figure is holding the mushroom up to his face, as if to smell or somehow ingest its essence without ever exposing his face. And of course, he seems to be enjoying the experience, due to the caption that is brazenly splashed across the bottom of the graphic in bold block letters: "sooo delicious". Frankly, this design is fun and entertaining, and expresses a flair for life and for going against the grain.
However, this graphic is more than just a simple design for apparel to entertain the viewer. It is also a social statement that quite distinctly parodies our world's connection with nature. Although the figure in the design is interacting closely with objects from the natural world, he is also changing it, making it his own. This is exactly the way we are accustomed to participating in our life experiences, and this graphic illustrates that very well.
The provocative nature of this design is also very apparent even from first glance. The little man holds a mushroom that is, almost certainly, psychedelic in nature. Perhaps he hasn't ingested it yet, and perhaps nothing will come of its presence in the image, but it adds a distinctive flair that makes it a truly unique graphic. |
