The seas are no longer a place that can tolerate piracy, so well are they policed by various countries' navies and coast guard forces. Piracy in the air is much too dangerous, although airplane hijackings were once fairly common before security was increased. As far as piracy on foot.well, that is just called robbery, and no true pirate would stoop to such a thing. So essentially, in our society, the pirate has no place. He is even more outcast than he would have been in his sailing sloop during the sixteen hundreds, raiding ships as they sailed into port at a Caribbean island. The pirate has truly been left with no environment in which he can flourish, and thus has all but disappeared in actual reality.
While perhaps there are an insignificant amount of pirates actually operating today, pirates make an appearance in nearly every major form of art and expression from their early days till now. And now, more than ever, people are beginning to idealize the pirate lifestyle. They were adventurous people, spending their short lives chasing gold and walking into dangerous situations as if they hadn't a care in the world. They were cool, even in their own time period, and they have become even more so now; they have become trendy.
People nowadays don't get enough adventure. They sit in their offices and foster their careers. They sit at home and relax with their families. While these things are great, many people need a healthy dose of spontaneity to function in life, and often our modern lifestyle does not permit this deviation from routine and ordinary. What many people idealize most about pirates is their ability to just pack up and go, wherever, whenever, and for whatever reason they like. While this might not appeal to all in fact, the idea of it is quite tantalizing, and continues to keep pirate books and films popular today.
This graphic plays on the hip nature of pirates in our society by depicting in high contrast black and white a pirate with his eye patch looking out over two crossed swords. His image is one that is infused with a smattering of modern style, but still holds that classical background of the pirate ideal. Complete with his bandana and a caption in the rear stating "Pirates", this design is one of a kind, and is sure to attract attention. |
