While there have been apparel designs since much earlier on this century featuring figures and images that seem to flip the proverbial "bird" to the government, to authority, and to popular culture, many of them have been subtle, and rely on the viewers to understand the meaning of political figures or images that weren't quite clear on their focus. For example, one of the most popular political statements that has featured on graphic apparel designs is the South American revolutionary Che Guevara. While these types of designs express their view in contrast to the societal norms, they are often less easy to identify, especially to those of the younger generation these days who may never have heard of many of the different people who often appear in this type of graphic.
Many of today's counter-culture graphics are getting more and more overt, and losing all the subtlety that made them so effective in their earlier days. And yet some designs are able to combine that same subtlety with a newfound openness that makes them a product of our newer generation without losing the same quality that they had in the past. The bright and eye catching colours of psychedelic designs from the late nineteen sixties - early nineteen seventies are manifested in different types of patterns and graphics in today's modern art. In this graphic in particular, a haze of shapes, feather like designs, and whirls of psychedelic colours form the backdrop and the surrounding component for a figure that is most definitely expressing his dislike for something, which we can assume is modern society and its tendencies.
This figure, a male, reclining in a devil may care posture wearing a trendy outfit and sneakers, is raising a finger as a symbol to the world that he is the coolest guy around. He seems to be signalling to anyone who is willing to look that the rest of the world and society are completely below his regard.
All in all, this design is one of many that make a very strong social statement. While blending all at once the dreamy, provocative and trendy, this graphic makes sure that wherever one is, one is noticed, and regardless of the audience, it makes a case for being one of the coolest graphics around. |
