There has never been any question that being a New York City star is the dream of hundreds of thousands of young people both in the United States and around the globe. New York City is perhaps the most famous city in North America, and rivals London and Tokyo in size and expense. It is often referred to as the artistic centre of the USA, and this is for a good reason: more highly acclaimed poets, artists, novelists, actors and actresses, and musicians have come out of the New York City scene than any other city in the country. Although New York City is perhaps not the biggest, and perhaps not the most famous city in the world, it is still enormous both in area and in fame.
There have been a multitude of NYC based apparel graphics made in recent years, and if you were to take a random sampling of a hundred people in a random town in the United States, it is likely that at least ten out of the hundred would own some sort of clothing item that displayed the words "New York" or "New York City" on it.
Regardless of the prevalence of such apparel, not all designs are created equal. This graphic stands far and above the rest of the crowded pack as it incorporates elements of several different social groups while focusing on the idea of a NYC star and what exactly it means to be such. The design hinges on a stereo near the bottom which seems to be bumping some sort of beat driven bass heavy music. The images and words are all rendered in a sort of graffiti style which lends an element of lawlessness to the design, and the street style of it begins to stand out more clearly once this is recognized.
Yet, this attitude toward what constitutes a New York City star has obviously changed significantly from its original. This concept that a NYC star is someone who is a part of the hip hop, street culture of America is a large step from the original idea of a NYC star: actors and actresses in Broadway plays! This permutation of the concept of "star" makes this graphic more than just a pretty, interesting image. It makes it a social statement of the first order, and makes wearing it a treat for each and every person who chooses to do so..
